What does the notification ‘Theme update available!’ mean?

At the top of your WordPress dashboard, there is a notification Theme update available! This means that there is a new version of leflite, the theme of your website. In this article, you will read what this entails, where to see what changes, and how to update it.

In short

  • A new version of the leflite theme is ready on Lef Creative’s update server.
  • With View changelog you can read what changes are made.
  • With Update theme you can update the theme.
  • Your pages, texts, and settings will remain intact.
  • Are you unsure if you can update it yourself? Please contact us first.

What do you see?

At the top of the dashboard and other management screens, there is a blue notification:

Theme update available!
“There is an update available for the theme ‘leflite’. Currently, version … is installed. You can update to version ….”

Below, there are two buttons: Update theme and View changelog. The notification will remain until the theme is updated.

Why are theme updates important?

The notification says it all: “It is important to keep the theme up-to-date because theme updates keep your website secure. Additionally, theme updates often bring new functionalities and resolve any issues.” A theme that hasn’t been updated for a long time falls behind on WordPress and plugins.

What changes? The changelog

Click on View changelog. A new tab will open with the update page. You will see:

  • at the top Update available, with your current and the new version;
  • the Changelog of the new version: what is new and what has been resolved;
  • Theme information, including the Current version and the New version.

Good to know: the button View changelog and updating only work for users who are allowed to update themes, usually the administrator. If you see the notification but don’t have access? Then your account does not have those rights.

Update: yourself or by us?

Whether you update yourself or we do it depends on the agreements you have with us. With WordPress maintenance we take care of the updates. If you do not have maintenance with us, or are not sure? Please contact us first before clicking Update theme. Also read why a maintenance contract is necessary.

Step by step updating

  1. Make sure there is a recent backup. See restoring a backup of your website.
  2. Read the changelog, so you know what to pay attention to after the update.
  3. Click on the notification Update theme. You will go to the details of the leflite theme. Click on the link there to update the theme now. You can also check the theme via Dashboard → Updates and click on Update themes.
  4. Wait until WordPress notifies you that the update is complete. Do not close the window in between.

After the update

  • The notification has disappeared.
  • Any adjustments to the database for the new version run automatically. You don’t have to do anything for that.
  • Check a few important pages: the homepage, a page with a form, and, if you have one, the webshop.
  • Does something look different than you expected? Check the changelog to see if it is an intentional change, or contact us.

Multisite

Is your website running as part of a network (multisite)? Then you will see in the notification: “Because this website is set up as a multisite, you will need to update the theme via the network management. This will update the theme on all websites within the network.” Leave that to the network administrator.

Note: never modify theme files yourself. They will be overwritten during an update and your modification will be lost.

Having trouble?

  • I cannot access the changelog. Your account may not have permission to update themes. Ask the administrator of your website.
  • The update is stuck or gives an error message. Refresh the page after a few minutes. If the notification is still there, please contact us.
  • After the update, a page looks different. Clear your browser’s cache and refresh. If it persists, please contact us.
  • The notification keeps coming back. There is a new version again. Each update has its own version number in the notification.
