Everything about email, domain, and hosting

Your website, your email, and your domain name are interconnected, but they are three different things. In this overview, you will read how they work together and which article you need if you want to arrange something or if something is not working.

In short

  • Your domain name (yourbusiness.nl) points to your website and your mailboxes.
  • Your website runs on hosting; the SSL certificate provides the padlock.
  • You read your email on your phone and laptop using a mail app.
  • Mail sent from your website (forms) goes through WP Mail SMTP.
  • Questions about hosting, domain, or mailboxes? You can arrange that with us.

Your email on your devices

You read your business email (for example, info@yourbusiness.nl) in a mail app on your phone, tablet, or computer. How to set that up, with the details per app, is explained in setting up email on your devices.

An extra email address

A new colleague or a separate address for invoices? You can request an extra address from us. See request an extra email address.

Your domain name

Your domain name is the address of your website. Through the DNS settings of the domain, you determine where your website is located (the A record) and where your mail arrives (the MX records). If your domain is with another provider and your website is with us, read linking your domain name to your website.

SSL: the padlock

An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your website and the visitor. You can see it by the padlock and https:// in the address bar. Without SSL, the browser shows “Not secure”. More about that in what an SSL certificate does.

Mail sent from your website

Your website also sends mail: messages from your contact form, an email for a new password, and (in a webshop) order confirmations. That mail goes through the WP Mail SMTP plugin, ensuring it arrives neatly and doesn’t end up in spam. See ensuring that the mail from your website arrives.

Hosting at Lef

Your website runs on hosting: a server that makes your website accessible 24 hours a day. If you choose a package with us, hosting is included, along with an SSL certificate and backups. What exactly is included in your package can be read on our page about web hosting. Do you have a question about your own hosting, mailboxes, or domain? We can arrange that together: contact us or call 06 35 66 47 73.

Good to know: your website and your email do not have to be with the same provider. That is why it is important that when moving your website, you do not accidentally change the settings for your mail (MX records).
