How do I create a subpage under a main page?
Do you have multiple services, locations, or products each with their own page? Then place them under a main page. Your pages will have a logical address, such as /services/webdesign/, and you can automatically display all subpages as tiles on the main page.
In short
- Open the page and select on the right in the sidebar under Main the main page.
- With Order you determine the order of the subpages.
- The address will be /mainpage/subpage/.
- Display all subpages as tiles with the block Highlight. You can adjust the menu yourself.

Why subpages?
- Overview: in the list under Pages, subpages are indented under their main page.
- A clear address: visitors and Google immediately see which page belongs where.
- Automatic tiles: a new subpage automatically appears on the main page.
- Breadcrumb: a breadcrumb shows the path Home › Services › Webdesign. See show a breadcrumb.
Step 1: Open the page
Open the page that should become a subpage, or create a new one (see add a new page). The main page must already exist.
Step 2: Choose the main page
Open the Page tab on the right in the sidebar. Click on the current value under Main and select or search for the main page, for example, Services. Save the page with Update.
Step 3: Determine the order
In the same section of the sidebar, you will find Order: a number. Subpages with a lower number come first. For example, give them 10, 20, and 30; then you can easily add one in between later.
What changes about the address?
The address of the subpage will have the main page in front of it: /webdesign/ becomes /services/webdesign/. Internal links in menus that you have added via the list of pages will automatically adjust.
Note: if the page was already online, then the address changes. Links in Google, in newsletters, or in your own texts will still point to the old address. WordPress does not always redirect them neatly. Therefore, set up a redirect from the old to the new address; see set up a redirect and change the URL of your page.
Automatically display subpages as tiles
- Open the main page and place the block Highlight in a column.
- Choose Type of highlight for All underlying pages.
- Leave Main page empty: then the block will show the subpages of the page it is on. You can also choose another main page.
- Choose a Card template and the number of Cards per row.
The tiles will be in the order you set under Order. If you later create a new subpage, it will automatically be added. More in automatically display all your subpages as tiles.
And the menu?
The menu does not change automatically. Do you want the subpage in the menu, under the main page? Add it under Menus and drag it slightly to the right, under the main page. Then it becomes a dropdown menu. See adjust the main menu.
Having trouble?
- The main page is not in the list: is it published? A draft cannot usually be chosen as a main page. Also, search by title.
- The tiles show nothing: does the main page have published subpages? Drafts are not displayed.
- The tiles are in a strange order: give each subpage a number under Order.
- The old address gives an error page: set a redirect, see above.
