How do I set quick category links and text on a category page?

A category page becomes stronger with two things: quick buttons to subcategories above the products, and a piece of text or complete sections below. The buttons help your visitor find the right product faster, and the text helps Google understand what the page is about.

In short

  • Automatic: Automatically quick navigation above archives shows subcategories as buttons or with images.
  • Per category: Direct to display with your own choice of categories.
  • Text under a category: the field Archive outro.
  • Sections under a category: Builders at the bottom of the archive page.

Automatic: quick navigation above each category

If a category has subcategories, leflite can automatically display them above the products. Go to General options → Webshop, tab Webshop, and choose at Automatically quick navigation above archives:

  • Highlight nothing automatically
  • Display as buttons
  • Display with category image: with the image you set for the category.

With Automatically quick navigation above archives highlight amount you determine how many appear. By default, that is 5. If you want them all, enter a high number, like 999. Click on Update.

Step 1: Open a product category

Do you want to choose which buttons appear per category, or add text or a section below? Go to Products → Categories and click on the name of the category. At the bottom of the screen are the extra fields from leflite.

Step 2: Set Direct to display

  1. Turn Direct to display on.
  2. Type in Direct to introduction a short text above the buttons, such as “Direct to:”.
  3. Choose at Direct to categories the categories that will receive a button. These can also be categories outside of this category.
  4. Turn Direct to display with category images on if you want tiles with the category photo instead of buttons.
  5. Choose at Direct to categories button color the color of the buttons.
  6. Click on Update.

Do you want this on the main shop page as well? The same fields are under Products → Archive settings product. You can read more about that page in customizing an overview page.

Step 3: Add text under the category

Type in the field Archive outro a text about the category: what kind of products they are, what to look for when choosing, frequently asked questions. You can use headings and links. The text will appear below the products. Where exactly (across the entire width or only next to the filter) is set with WooCommerce archive outro display, see the top of the shop page.

Tip: Write the outro for people, not for Google. A few paragraphs with real help in choosing works better than a block of text full of keywords. Use Heading 2 and Heading 3 in the outro, no Heading 1: that is already on the page.

Step 4: Add sections under the category

Do you want more than just text, like a section with USPs, reviews, or a contact block? Then use builders. A builder is a saved piece of page that you can use in multiple places; see what builders and patterns are.

  • Builders at the bottom of the archive page: choose one or more builders. If you choose none, nothing will appear below.
  • General builders display: is on by default. Then the builders you have set for all product overviews will also appear. Turn this off to hide them on this category.
  • Position of general builders: Above the builders of this archive page or Below the builders of this archive page.

A custom filter per category

At the very bottom is Custom filter. If you turn that on, this category will get its own filter instead of the general one. After saving, a sidebar for this category will appear in Widgets, which you fill with filters. Handy if you filter by size in one category and by color in another. Read setting the filter on the shop page.

Good to know: You can also place categories as buttons or tiles on a regular page, using the Highlight Categories/Taxonomy block. See displaying categories as buttons, links, or cards.

Not working?

  • There are no automatic buttons. The automatic navigation only shows subcategories. If the category has none, nothing will appear.
  • You won’t see the fields Direct to introduction and further. They only appear when Direct to display is turned on.
  • The tiles have no image. Set a Thumbnail (image) for each category via Products → Categories.
  • The custom filter is empty. Fill the new sidebar in Widgets. As long as it is empty, no filter will appear.
